"Gandhi"

While working as Arts Editor at The Michigan Daily, I went on two junkets to Los Angeles. The first was in 1982 sponsored by Columbia Pictures and offered twenty or so college newspaper critics a sneak peak at "Gandhi". Besides viewing the movie, I had a chance to interview the director, Sir Richard Attenborough, actor Ben Kingsley, and Martin Sheen.

As you know, Attenborough won Best Director and Best Picture awards for Gandhi while Kingsley won Best Actor.

Coincidentally, I had seen Kingsley in Peter Brooks' groundbreaking version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1970. (Of course, I didn't know it was groundbreaking until years afterward.) And I ran in to Sheen in 1980 while he was stumping for Ted Kennedy's failed presidential bid. I don't belive either remembered me.
